This summer Arpia organises the third edition of the yearly ARPIA arts festival, with once more The Old Brick Kiln in Sint-Lievens-Esse as the dynamic epicentre. During three weekends, from 25 August to 9 September, you can visit, besides the permanent outdoor art track that is accessible the year through, a temporary exhibition inside and around the walls of The Old Brick Kiln.
ARPIA 2012 also offers an extensive parallel program. During the festival, The Old Brick Kiln is transformed into a temporary meeting place with a pop-up bar with organic and regional products and a book lounge about art and landscape.
All activities are for free!
The festival program:
>> Continuous:
The outdoor track of permanent art works is put into the spotlights Bar with local products Book lounge on art and landscape Temporary exhibition in The Old Brick Kiln Every Saturday at 15h a guided tour along the artworks Every Sunday at 11h a thematic landscape walk Groups, school visits and personalised guided tours: on appointment, also possible outside the festival period
>> Weekend 24 (!), 25 & 26 / 08
The complete weekend program with all activities you can find HERE in pdf.
Festive opening weekend with several workshops, interventions, walks, performances, conversations and tales for the young and elder, in collaboration with the Sideways 2012 artists caravan.
Vernissage exhibition in The Old Brick Kiln with artworks of Johan Opstaele and .R...L.
Sunday at 11am: Thematic walk "Slowly goes the walker": Short walk of maximum 2 km. We dwell on at first sight objective landscape elements that, by narrowing (or broadening), obtain a subjective experience. What does an old tree tell us? Why are there hedges in the woods? Where does the road lead to? Why idyll is utopia ... Impressions can be displayed by the participants in the Arpia-hiking book. (Guide: Chris De Smedt - Dutch spoken)
The whole opening weekend long we will be enjoying the musical presence of Los Hermanos Brothers who will spoil us with their vinyl sessions.
>> For this weekend our partner Sideways 2012 ensures a free shuttle service between the train station of Herzele and The Old Brick Kiln <<
>> Weekend 1 & 2 / 09
Follow-up of Sideways2012
Sunday at 11am: Thematic walk "Production Landscape": The philosopher, the walker and the artist like to see the landscape as a concept. But how do we relate at the production and consumption landscape? What is the importance of the farmer? We will come to a halt along fields, forests and extraction area. A local organic farmer talks about his perception of the landscape and the production of organic vegetables and fruit. We visit the organic farm de Kollebloem and we are served a delicious organic picnic with bread, spreads and juices. An idyllic picnic spot has been chosen alongside an artwork of Gilles Bruni. (Guide: Chris De Smedt- Dutch spoken) Attention: For the picnic that consists entirely of organic ingredients and the guided tour by the organic farmer we ask a participation of 12€. Register in advance (before 1 Sept.) via the guide by sending her an E-MAIL.
Sunday at 4pm: Afternoon-Tea-Time with tasty home made seasonal snacks made of local products… and with artistic surprizes!
>> Weekend 8 & 9 / 09
Artistic intervention(s) within the theme of Open Monuments Day: MUSIC, WORD, IMAGE
Sunday at 11am: Thematic walk "Words from the landscape": The guide takes you on a rash trip where not `knowledge` but `personal impression` is central. The walkers all contribute to the writing of a book based on words plucked from the landscape. We stand still at special places where anecdotes are told and time is taken to reflect. (Guide: Chris De Smedt - Dutch spoken)
Sunday at 13:30: "The map is not the territory" Art Happening of Griet Dobbels - Walkers drawing a living contour line of the landscape - filmed from a helicopter - Wanted: 600 walkers! - More info can be found HERE.
Tired but satisfied we can enjoy together a tasty picnic around a cosy campfire with musical accompaniment. Of course also those who didn’t participate in the art happening are very welcome! Local drinks will be available at the Arpia bar in The Old Brick Kiln, along with some tasty snacks - but bring your own picknick and bbq ingredients.

Because a respectful integration of the works of art in the environment is of such importance, Arpia cooperates very closely with Hogeschool Ghent and the University of Ghent to make an inventory of the landscape. Art in and with the landscape is analysed with attention through different disciplines. Students in landscape development, landscape architecture, as well as art students are involved in the analysing. The results and conclusions were made public during Arpia 2011.

Walkers draw a living contour line in the landscape of Herzele
The whole action will be filmed from a helicopter and is a preparation for later contour line walks in rough mountainous areas, like in North England, Scotland, Austria and Switzerland. In those areas the goal is to create permanent “contour line walking paths” that draw an organic line through the landscape. After several years these paths would become visible on Google Maps. During the happening in Herzele a temporary living contour line will be drawn, which will be filmed from high altitude.
Practical: Startingpoint: Woubrechtegem at 13:30 Parking lot: Dancings, Doornstraat 2-3, 9550 Sint-Lievens Esse
From there a shuttle takes the walkers to the contour line location. It’s a walking path with small obstacles, not possible with prams. The whole action will be filmed from high altitude: please wear colourful clothes. Wear walking shoes (rain boots if rainy weather). End foreseen around 5p.m. A shuttle takes the walkers back to the parking lot. All together, the walker will cover about 5 kilometres. Toilets are available at the point of departure / end point. Afterwards everyone receives a ticket worth 1 consumption.
Tired but satisfied we can enjoy together a tasty picnic around a cosy campfire with musical accompaniment. Of course also those who didn’t participate in the art happening are very welcome! Local drinks will be available at the Arpia bar in The Old Brick Kiln, along with some tasty snacks - but bring your own picknick and bbq ingredients.

together with the Arpia art route presenting works by a.o. Gilles Bruni, Masashi Echigo, Rhodri Davies, Els Van Riel, Christelle Fillod and Jesse Cremers.
For the next Thematics around `Art Land - rural and urban landscapes’, Bains Connective and Arpia (trans-disciplinary laboratory with a focus on art and landscape) join forces and invite the architect / musician Miquel Casaponsa (ES / BE), the visual artist Trudy Moore (AUS), the theorist / writer John Grande (CA) and the visual artists Claire Stragier & Annelien Vermeir (BE).
Bains Connective started this residential project in 2007. For each episode, artists from different disciplines and from diverse backgrounds, are invited and stimulated to think, practice and research during two months around a central theme. The Thematics around `Art Land - rural and urban landscapes’, reflects on art in relation to its environment and explores both rural and urban contexts.
From September 12 until October 9 2011 the 5 guest artists reside in the country side, in the region of Herzele in East-Flanders. After one month they move to the city of Brussels, to continue their research in the former brewery Bellevue, where they will also show the open ended results of their research on the 4th of November 2011.
But first, we offer you the chance to already become acquainted with the artists and the theme. On Sunday, October 9 2011, from 13:00 to 18:00, the Thematics-residents present their first findings, during the Plankton # 41, in and around the old brick kiln in Herzele. This unique location is also the epicenter and meeting point of Arpia`s permanent art track and temporary exhibition, that show works by a.o. Gilles Bruni (FR), Masashi Echigo (JP/BE), Rhodri Davies (GB), Els van Riel (BE), Christelle Fillod (FR) and Jesse Cremers (BE).
2 flies in one swing and … we even bring you to the spot!
Bains Connective arranged a bus service from Brussels to Herzele and back. Perhaps take your picnic for lunch? Local drinks and snacks are available on site. Coffee and cake are served in the afternoon.

Jonathan Prior is an academic researcher and sound artist based in Edinburgh, Scotland. In his work, he is interested in how people perceive their everyday sound environment, and uses different creative strategies such as sound maps, acoustic tours, and soundwalking to investigate this. This presentation will give examples of these different approaches, and will explore more generally why sound is a rich and fascinating arena for academics and artists to work in. Jonathan`s work can be found at: http://12gatestothecity.com/
This lecture is organised in the frame of the Thematics around `Art Land - rural and urban landscapes’. Bains Connective started this residential project in 2007. For each episode, artists from different disciplines and from diverse backgrounds, are invited and stimulated to think, practice and research during two months around a central theme. The Thematics around `Art Land - rural and urban landscapes’ reflects on art in relation to its environment and explores both rural and urban contexts. The guest artists are the architect / musician Miquel Casaponsa (ES / BE), the visual artist Trudy Moore (AUS), the theorist / writer John Grande (CAN) and the visual artists Claire Stragier & Annelien Vermeir (BE).
The past month the 5 guest artists resided at Arpia, on the country side, in the region of Herzele in East-Flanders. On October 10 they moved to the city of Brussels, to continue their work in the former brewery Bellevue, where they will also show the open ended results of their research on the 4th of November 2011.
